Multiculturalism can be defined as 'the
preservation of different cultures or cultural identities within a unified
society, as a state or nation' (a definition by
Dictionary.com).
'Multiculturalism describes the existence, acceptance, or
promotion of multiple cultural traditions within a single jurisdiction, usually
considered in terms of the culture associated with an ethnic group. This can happen when a jurisdiction is created or
expanded by amalgamating areas with two or more different cultures (e.g. French Canada and English Canada) or through immigration from different jurisdictions
around the world (e.g. Australia,United States, United Kingdom,
and many other countries)' (a defintion by Wikipedia).
America is commonly considered to be a 'melting
pot' of cultures, religions, nationalities, beliefs, and the like. Bosnia and Herzegovina is also a country where
multiculturalism has a long tradition and is represented by the coexistence of
people with different cultural, religious, ethnic or national backgrounds. It
is therefore considered to be a multicultural, multiethnic and
multiconfessional country. Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina are among a few
cities and countries in the world, where multiculturalism is symbolically
represented by the Monumento to Multiculturalism by Francesco Perilli.
the Monumento to Multiculturalism in Toronto |
the Monumento to Multiculturalism in Sarajevo |
Multiculturalism embraces the
concept of diversity which encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual
is unique and recognizing our individual differences. Individuals or groups
with different traditions and cultures can enrich society. Multicultural
countries enjoy the advantages of the varied cultures, experiences, languages,
skills and points of view of their citizens. Multiculturalism means the
celebration of individualism and plurality at the same time. Diversity includes
differences in gender, age, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, religion,
socio-economic background, education level, and physical ability. Each element of diversity is a unique and
essential component to benefit society at large. Multiculturalism also means the
practice of giving equal emphasis to the needs and contributions of all culture
groups, especially minority groups which are traditionally underrepresented in
a society. Therefore, all society members should engage in acts of
multiculturalism while learning to appreciate and celebrate the differences
among individuals.
As multiculturalism is
usually associated with the arrival of immigrant communities and their
acceptance by the hosting countries, it 'occurs naturally when a society is
willing to accept the culture of immigrants (with, ideally, immigrants also
willing to accept the culture of the land to which they have come)' (from Wikipedia).
Multiculturalism has also brought a number of challenges both on a global scale
and in countries which are heterogenious and multiethnic. Some of the
challenges are how to accommodate everyone and protect vulnerable groups from
discrimination, prejudices, racism, etc., and how to give newcomers a fair
treatment. Unfortunately, we are witnesses of migrations on a global scale in
today's world, and how those poor people are more than often treated in a bad
way.
Generally speaking,
there are two different trends in modern society, reflecting a twofold approach
to multicultural policies. Multiculturalism or globalism? On the one hand,
there is a tendency to maintain the distinctiveness of different ethnic groups,
while on the other, there seems to be an appeal for all groups to assimilate
and embrace the national identity, traditions and values of the country they live
in. Many countries have developed different policies and strategies to promote
multiculturalism. This is visible in education, in the media and other areas
which propagate diversity and equal opportunities for all, regardless of
background.
'Multicultural education refers to any form of education or
teaching that incorporates the histories, texts, values, beliefs, and
perspectives of people from different cultural backgrounds. At the classroom
level, for example, teachers may modify or incorporate lessons to reflect
the cultural diversity of the students in a particular class. In many cases,
“culture” is defined in the broadest possible sense, encompassing race,
ethnicity, nationality, language, religion, class, gender, sexual orientation,
and “exceptionality”—a term applied to students with specialized needs or
disabilities' (a
definition by the Glossary of Education Reform). For more about
multicultural education, you can use these links: School
of Education at Johns Hopkins University-The Scope of Multicultural Education
and Multicultural
Education – EdChange.
The basic goal of
multicultural education is to teach and encourage our children to appreciate
and understand other cultures as well as their own. Teaching with a
multicultural perspective thus promotes the child's sense of the uniqueness of
his own culture and also enables the child to accept and embrace the uniqueness
of the cultures of others. Teachers can help children eliminate stereotypes
about cultures different from their own by presenting materials and activities
that enable them to learn about the similarities of all individuals (you may
follow these links to find out more about Multicultural
Education in Your Classroom and Multicultural
Education/Curriculum). Children should learn about how they are different
and similar to others in order to appreciate and understand the other and
something which is not their own.
Generally speaking, the
basic principle of multicultural education is educational equity for all
students, removing barriers to educational opportunities and success for all, regardless
of their different cultural backgrounds. Teaching multiculturalism is like
playing a puzzle game, where every piece is unique and different, but the different pieces fit together
into one whole picture when they are all put into their place. Teachers should
teach students that every member of our society is unique, with different
cultural backgrounds, but we all fit together to form one picture.
For our class
discussion on the blog, think about the concept of multiculturalism and how can
we benefit most from it? Would it make a difference in our lives in the future?
Are there any drawbacks that you can think of as well? Multiculturalism or
globalism, which one would prevail? Think about multiculturalism in our country
and how it is reflected to our everyday life? How important is multicultural
education? How is it different from classical education? How would you teach
your students to appreciate and understand those who have different cultural,
ethnic or religious backgrounds? ...
Here is the reminder of
what we did in class and the materials we used for our class discussion and
practice:
Hi,
ReplyDeleteDifferent people have different views to things, like or dislike, agree or disagree. Multiculturalism is a controversial issue in America. Some people think that multiculturalism is negative, whereas some others think that multiculturalism is positive. In my opinion, I agree with the second view, that multiculturalism is positive.
Why is so hard to believe in good of multiculturalism ? People are afraid of a different one. They don't believe they can learn from them, although we can. People believe in power, they want to be more superior than unity. They do not see unity as a salvation for all people. Happiness.
Multiculturalism can be happines and should be. This topic makes me sad for multiculturalism in our country.
It can be an example of unity and forgiveness as it once was, maybe better. Our biggest problem is the nation. All are fighting for their territory like animals. Why all would not be a big country of the same nation?
People's problem is religion. They just do not believe in differently. They think they are the smartest, and they doesn't see how many are left behind. All have been better if we want and we are working on. I believe in our generation and the generation after. I hope that people poisoned by hatred go, and people "poisoned" by love to stay and spread happiness.
Multiculturalism is no negativity. It is difficult to live in a multicultural country that has not adopted the multiculture. Rejection of multiculture makes difficult to find a job, finish school, become a man. By accepting multiculture become tolerant, better people, get to know more people, have new friends, learn new things. Classical education not develop our humanity. Just learning the facts that we may (not) need.
Everyone is on his own special way. Multiculturalism accepts it.
"Teaching multiculturalism is like playing a puzzle game, where every piece is unique and different, but the different pieces fit together into one whole picture when they are all put into their place."
There is no more beautiful and powerfull sentences to describe multiculture and this we need to teach our children.

DeleteHi,Aida,
DeleteI agree with the most of what you wrote. It is very nice, and positive to believe in multiculturalism. I can see you are very nostalgic about past times, thinking how people lived united and in peace back in Titos time. If they really lived in such harmony, it would not take so little for them to crack and become such a bloodthirsty animals. Yes, "Titos time" was better then our own in so many ways, but brotherhood and unity was just a well thought propaganda.
No hard feelings, just sharing opinions! :D
Hi Jasmina,
DeleteWe are here to share our opinions. I agree with your opinion but that was better than today. I liked the propaganda in the Tito era of unity and brotherhood, but the propaganda of hatred. There are people who are doing what they are doing but there are people, unfortunately, who blindly follow the same people.
Tito's time, had good and bad things like any other. Today, evil is in every corner.
I prefer hatred that people don't show than this today. Sounds hypocritical but is easier to live like that. If we can't live in a true multicultural country it is better to look for a better life for everyone.
You can hates me but don't show it. We should be aware that isn't right to hate.
The problem are older generation who teach the younger generation to hate.

BUT, I can't agree with your opinion about multiculturalism in our country. I think that we have something that is very rare to see, wealth. Maybe we are not aware enough of what we have inherited. It's better so look from the brighter side, life is way more positive.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteThe concept of multiculturalism is used to describe one way of approaching cultural diversity within a society. Cultural differences should be respected or even encouraged, i.e. members of different cultures can live peacefully alongside each other; assimilation is not necessary, nor perhaps even desirable. Multiculturalism keeps us open - minded. Once we have been exposed to beliefs of someone whose ideas seem foreign to us, we can begin to reflect on the narrowness of our world view and how it adversely affects our ability to think and solve problems. So, there is a development in an intellectual way. A multicultural society also makes people being less racist and leads to a non discrimination society, having a more peaceful environment. On the other hand, there are some drawbacks like the destruction of the definition of each culture, I.e. losing identity. Our country is a multicultural country where people communicate with each other, sharing ideas and perspectives and seeing situations from another point of view. People nowadays feel comfortable and have a peaceful environment. It is very important to include multiculturalism and diversity in education of children. An emphasis of multicultural activities across the curriculum can help improving positive socialisation behaviors among children. Multicultural education fosters positive self - regard in one's own culture and positive attitudes towards the culture of others. I would teach my students to appreciate and understand those who have different cultural, ethnic or religious backgrounds through the integration of the excellent resources and materials focused on teaching kids about diversity, like instruments and music from around the world, books from around the world, dramatic play clothing and accessories from around the world, art materials, photographs, posters, displays. .

Hi everybody,
ReplyDeleteNow I will give a brief overview and my thinking on this subject. Multiculturalism is an extensive subject that provides a range of opinions, thinking and certain attitudes. There are those who have a negative opinion about this, and who do not support multiculturalism. My commitment and opinion that multiculturalism is something positive, something that provides a variety of life, acceptance of diversity and the possibility of greater knowledge of the different traditions, customs and culture. Accepting the other primarily we do good work, if we value and respect ourselves and ours, then we should be prepared to respect and appreciate others. Generally, today, we find strong resistance when it comes to multiculturalism, and this is reflected in the country, education and politics. What's interesting to me is the mention certain links, or word of the subject. First of all the term Multikultopia a satirical term for the state, the city or society, in which multiculturalism showed and proved unsuccessful, a failed idea and unrealistic ideas "idyllic" and polite "rich" society and policy, mainly in some European countries. Finally, I pointed out that the size of each man is how to accept the other, in my opinion multiculturalism contributes much to every community, greater tolerance, learning about other cultures, learn something new that we had not known. The advantage of those who are for something a little different is that in the multicultural community will be accepted and understood. It is very difficult to change the minds of the older generation, but I hope that the new generation will be better understanding and thinking and will understand the positive side of what multiculturalism provides. Finally, I leave you a very interesting link that talks about how multiculturalism has changed the face of Australia. http://www.tportal.hr/vijesti/svijet/280156/Kako-je-multikulturalizam-promjenio-lice-Australije.html

ReplyDeleteHello everyone.
ReplyDeleteThe multiculturalism is a very forceful term. It presents a cultural differences, historical heritage, which is present in our country and wich makes her rich and beautiful. Multiculturalism is also acceptance of other people, cultures and their heritage, their food and chlotes, music etc.. For example, in our country there are many cultures, Muslims, Catolichs, Orthodox, Jewish, Romany etc. and we have a church, mosque, synagogue in the same street, couple meters away from each other. It's very unique and fasctinating that in Bosnia you can hear when muezzin is callin for prayers and church bells in the same time. This mix of religions is overwhelming, powefull and confusing at the same time, and everyone can feel it while walking through Bosnia. We are getting more rich by showing interest and learning about differnt cultures, languages, rituals, and respect them. A very important aspect of today's societies where different cultures exist side by side and are respected equally. Taking into considereation the most recent refugee crisis, multiculturalism, that in a way entails tolerance and acceptance of something different, needs to be at the forefront of modern politics an international relations.

Hi, Mia
DeleteI most defenetly agree with you.
Multiculturalism is the reason by Bosnia is so beautiful, all of the different religions and cultures all in one place. You dont have to do far to learn about other religions, your neighbor might be able to teach you everything you need to know. So many different holydays that we all get to enjoy no matter what religion we are. Yes I agree it can be confusing some times especially to people that are not used to so many different religions at the same time. It can be confusing to hear a muezzin calling for prayers and church bells in the same time, but you get used to it. That is what makes our country so unique and special.

Hi Ermina,
DeleteI am glad that we think the same. I proudly can say that I am very proud to live in such a place like Bosnia, because of what we have, is a reason to come home every time you go somewhere. Just like you said it's confusing for people who come in visit, but we know that multiculturalism is something what makes Bosnia so beautiful country.

• Hello Madam Mia,
DeleteI would fully agree with your opinion. I really like what you are based on our country because it is an ideal example of multiculturalism. It is fascinating that when at the same time we hear and feel the stability of many religions, cultures at the same time, it gives an amazing feeling. All who respect their culture and religion, will respect the other. The moral is not to make yourself and others problems because of the important and unimportant, or acquirable insurmountable differences. Tolerance is a virtue that does not exhaust the respect of national or religious differences, but the respect and acceptance of unimaginable, almost infinite differences between each person, because every man is a separate and quite hermetic, culture, if not a separate and impenetrable world
Goodbye.

Hi everybody,
ReplyDeleteIn sociology, multiculturalism is the view that cultural differences should be respected or even encouraged.I agree with that. We should encourade multiculturalism. We should try to learn for people of different cultures. Because how can we expect people to understand us and our coltures if we do not understand their. I personaly have learned a lot for people that I can call my friends. People who have different believes, from people who have been raised with different views of the world. We live in a world where many people do not appreciate others and thair believes. A world where poeple are scared to learn about other cultures, their believes, their views of the world. Sociologists use the concept of multiculturalism to describe one way of approaching cultural diversity within a society. Underlying multiculturalism is the belief that members of different cultures can live peacefully alongside each other, and that is possible. Take a look at Bosnia, or Sarajevo, so many people and different cultures, and yet we live along side eachother. Yes there are some problems from time to time, but nothing that can not be fixed. Learnig about other countries, the ways that other people live, has always been inspirational for me. I can honestly say that some things that I have learned form people of different coltures, things that were not taught to me by my parents and family have made my life better. You have to understand that the road we walk on, our life, it is not straight, it has a lot of twists and turns, and understanding different people and different coltures will help us make the right turns in our lives. We can not be afraid to try different things in life. That is what makes life so interesting. So learn explore, it wont make your life nay harder, it can only make it easier and more interesting.

Hello everyone,
ReplyDeleteI think the best example of multiculturalism is our city Sarajevo.
Multiculturalism means acceptance of multiple cultural traditions. Different religious groups live in Sarajevo and cultural difference is something that makkes our city so special.
There are only a few cities in the world who have four different religious places of worship in the same street.
Many differnt nationalities also live in Sarajevo: Muslims, Serbs, Croats , Jews and they all have their traditions and customs and they all respect each other.
Children of different nations attend the same school.
Many tourists come to Sarajevo from different parts of the world and they are very surprised with our way of life.
Amra Selmanovic PO3
Hello Amra,
DeleteI agree with you. Our city is really special, and support every religion, every collor of skin, and every tradition. People in Sarajevo love other people, and they are helping other people whenever they need help, nevermind if that people are Serbs, Roma... Sarajevo people love this city. Our only accident is that we have government that encourages hatred. I hope this will change in future.

Hi Mia and Aida,
ReplyDeleteMia, I am glad that you share my opinion. We have to teach children to love (like their future teachers and parents as well), not to hate like some older generations do, as Aida said and I agree with that. There are still such people and we have to stop it through education, because as Nelson Mandela said 'education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world'.
Aida, I also agree with you that multiculturalism is positive. In my opinion, there is nothing negative about it because 'the beauty of the world lies in the diversity of its people'.
Mia, Bosnia is such a great example of multiculturalism and I am happy that you focused on it.
Best regards,

Our capital of Sarajevo is probably the best example of multicultural society where Catholic and Orthodox church stand next to each other and great mosque neighbor with the synagogue, down the street from the first two. Even after the war they are still here standing were they stud for decades.

Every part of Earth is place for everyone who thinks better for themselves. Ofcourse we all take our cultures and traditions where ever we go.
No matter if we are black or white, rich or poor, muslims or christians, no matter where we come from, we are all equal. Muticultural is all about understanding people regardless of what religion, race, or what country they come from and it is one objective to becoming a human being.

Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteWell, for me living in a multicultural society with people with different traditions and perspectives makes us communicate with each other more which is plus because when we communicate, we share ideas and perspectives, so everyone learns a new way to see the world or even a small thing or situation. So there is a development in an intellectual way. Being in a multicultural society also leads to a more open-minded population; people start to see situations from another point of view. Cooperating together is promoting the respect and the tolerance between different cultures what makes people start to feel comfortable living and interacting. A multicultural society also makes people being less racist, leads to a non discrimination society and making a more peaceful environment which can make a difference in our lives in the future. As a drawback I can mention that many people think that living in a multicultural society can leads to the destruction of the definition of each culture but I don't see it like that. And about globalism, well, I think it will take time (if it's going to prevail) becasue, even if it offers a lot, I don't think that we people we have not nearly reached the stage in which we humans can live in a way to realize utopia. In our country situation is still difficult and there is still some sorts of segregation which usually have ethnic, religious or cultural base. Multicultural education is very important and it's different from classical education because modern efforts of multicultural education are supporting and pointing on a process of mutual respect and a new cultural tolerance and we can recognize it in schools which implementing inclusion. And the best way to teach my students to appreciate and understand those who have different cultural, ethnic or religious backgrounds is breaking stereotypes and prejudices by supporting them to grow with multicultural society and teaching them to be tolerant to diversity because I do think diversity is a treasure of our country.

ReplyDeleteFood choices could be a good metaphor for the advantages of multiculturalism. The vast majority of food choices (in our times) are the result of multiculturalism. Everything from a plethora of potato derived products, to tomato based Italian, hot salsa Hispanic, the rich sauces of French cooking, to the variety to be found in Chinese and Indian food.
What a dull place this planet would be without such a rich variety of cuisines. Not to mention the incredible "fusion" being accomplished by mixing various food influences.
Plus, the technological, music, media and fashion worlds are also being influenced by the incredible mixtures coming out of multiculturalism
This multiculturalism becomes disturbing to many people due to the wide divergence in spiritual, political and cultural beliefs. Beliefs that affect proscriptions and taboos. Often influencing political agendas and eventually even laws.
Moreover, it is human nature to fear that which is not known or appears alien.. What lies at the heart of this disturbance is both ignorance and a great fear of change.
If the human species cannot learn to deal with multiculturalism and grow more tolerant of differences, than the only solution will be a homogenized cultural environment akin to what is beginning to happen all over the world. However, political divergence and violent conflict could well destabilize and destroy this.process. Much of which is promulgated through fear by clever power seeking individuals and influence seeking media sources.
Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteas we already said about multiculturism, I think that there is no other place like Sarajevo. And I don’t mean the breathtaking location of the place or the troubled recent history of the civil war and the siege. The capital of Bosnia is probably the most multicultural city in Europe, where Catholic and Orthodox church stand next to each other and great mosque neighbor with the synagogue, down the street from the first two. When looking at Sarajevo from one of the surrounding hills the tall minarets cross the sky but the more observant eye will spot church towers as well. Wandering around the old part of the city is like jumping between two words, from Central Europe to Middle East and the other way around. It is not Bosphorus in Istanbul where two cultures collide, it is Sarajevo!
The city has been a great example of tolerance that people were proud of and this resulted in the cosmopolitan atmosphere on the streets of Sarajevo.

I really like your opinion. Sarajevo is the most diverse city in Europe. There is no other place like Sarajevo.
DeleteMy country, like many others, is very multicultural. There are many people in my country that doesn’t have positive opinion about it. They think that living with people of other religion is bad.
ReplyDeleteI disagree about that. I think that it is not important which religion you are, it is important that you are a good person.
I know that not everyone will agree with my opinion that living in multicultural country is good and I respect that but I can’t agree with them. We could learn a lot from people of another religion just like they can learn from us and that is something we should also learn our children.

ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI think the best example for multiculturalisam is our country, Bosnia and Herzegovina. In our country there are a lot of different religions, cultures, customs, believs, etc.
Multiculturalism should be seen as a positive thing that stands us out among many European countries. It's nice to be different. It's nice to be human. :D

Hi, Emina. I agree with that it's nice to be different but it's more important to be human but I think that today it is hard. We can as a generation of young people make an effort to change some things and make them better on some way, because at least there are some things that we are not satisfied with and that we as a young people we need to change.

Dear colleagues,
ReplyDeleteWhen a child opens his first puzzle and the pieces fall to the ground, it may seem very confusing. What are they supposed to do with this pile of shapes in front of them? It often takes a parent to explain to them that all the different pieces fit together into one whole picture. Although every piece is different and unique, when they are all put into their place they form one whole picture. In the same way, teachers can teach multiculturalism in the classroom. Every member of our society is unique, with different cultural backgrounds, but we all fit together to form one picture. As Noel said "Understanding our own identity and the culture of our community requires knowledge and recognition of our cultures and communities and how they have shaped us". By adding a multicultural section to their curriculums, teachers can help students, like myself, see how each individual fits into the big picture. If we can do this on a class to class basis, I think that it will dramatically improve the community in a good way.
Students must be aware of their own culture, and how they are similar and different from others.
Best regards.

An example is Linda said is excellent , indicating that diversity can be a whole if they unite all the pieces of the puzzle . So it is same with people . We all constitute different worlds that sometimes they have similarities , and sometimes are distinct interests , speaking different languages , we pray in different ways , the things we see eye to eye , and that is why we are doing our world unique.

Dear colleagues,
ReplyDeleteAfter all these comments, there is really not much to add. However , I would like to share with you my earliest experience related to multiculturalism. I remember my first "contact" with multicultural education as a kid.My teacher came in front of my class, and started talking about how we should treat nice two of the student in class, one of them Roma boy, and the other special needs student. Before that "lecture", we did not even realized that they are any different from us. We played normally, fought about childish things, picking each other about who has a secret crush etc. From that point on, we actually, started seeing them differently, and acting differently too. We do not have to teach children about multiculturalism, equality, tolerance...In fact, just by observing their behavior, especially little children, we can learn a lot. I always have a picture in my mind of my four years old, asking a little Roma girl ,begging in the middle of the sidewalk, not to sit on the cold street, worried about her getting cold, while the rest of adults kept passing by, not paying attention at all. Children are not born intolerant, racists, with stereotypes or prejudice. Once I read:"If a man suddenly starts to fly in front of a child and in front of an adult, it is most likely that the child would not react at all, considering it normal, while the adult will, most probably, faint." By watching our actions and behavior in front of different, they learn how they should behave, taking us as an idealized roll model, who can not be wrong. And it is up to us, teachers, to be the best roll model they can get, because we have the power of helping them stay good, tolerant and open minded.
Best regards,
Jasmina J.P. RN III
Dear Jasmina,
DeleteI could not but notice the example you gave about that Roma boy. We all experienced, at least once, that we did not even notice difference until somebody pointed it out. Really, there is no need to teach our children tolerance or multiculturality, etc. We should simply show them trough our own behaviour and trough our own example.

Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteMulticulturalism is about respecting your own and other cultures, religious, beliefs, ethnicity, traditions, accepting differences in people. Our country is a great example of how can people from different cultures, religious belifes etc. live together in peaceful and respectful environment. Unique example of this is the fact that in Sarajevo there are mosque, church, orthodox church and synagogue placed in a radius of a hundred metres. You can often hear ringing bells from the church and adhan in the mosque at the same time. That is what I'm proud of. I think that despite minority in our society, people do respect each others no matter what their name is, which colour their skin is, because beneath all of that, we are just humans, and we need to search for the best in other people without prejudice. No matter what language someone speaks, or what clothes they wear you can always learn something from them and that is all that matters. The wealth of the Earth is diversity of cultures, nations, races, religions, customs that meets, share and learn from each other!

Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteMulticulturalism in its essence is the concept of accepting different views on religion, ethnic groups national heratige and so on. As such its difficult to for people to change their minds especially the older the people are. In this regard multiculturalism should be thought from the early days because if you teach children to accept others, later when they grow older they will be more prone to accept others views on the world, and with that their different cultures, religions, sexual orientation, gender and nationality. This will help them in their personal life and generally in life, for example when looking for an job a broader view on the world could help them to get the job while a narrow minded person with no tolerance for other cultures mind not even apply for it.
In regards with our country the core problem, in my opinion, is the clinginess to the past. Most people, even though they live in the present, their minds are focused in the past. The share thought of accepting something new is revolting to them, but in the end it is inevitable. Also religion should not be left out when our country is analysed, but what many people do not understand is that every religion teach us to accept others even though they are different. As of to how this problem should be resolved, I think it can not be done in the near future but rather we should focus to get rid of this problem from the roots. To teach our children to accept others cultures, but not to forget its own because it is an essential part of one person’s character.
Generally multiculturalism is something that should be accepted by the whole world because with the path which today’s society is going the concept of one country or one nation is disappearing slowly. In my opinion if people do not accept other cultures in the future they will be overwhelmed by the different cultures. So to be able to live we should learn the skill to accept other cultures , or to be precise to accept the different views on the world of the multicultural world we are going to live in.

Hello everyone,
ReplyDeleteWe all know that Bosnia and Herzegovina is a multicultural country . In Sarajevo , the city where I was born , grew up , attended primary and secondary school , and now higher education, I have learned to live , play and work with people from different cultures . Actually, I did not learn it , it came to me simply by living and not paying attention to these differences . I think we all need to respect and implement our own culture , but to respect other people's too . Everybody has right to freedom , faith , and their human rights. We should mutually respect and revere . In essence , we are all the same, just different houses have different habits and customs , but the soul is one . You should tend to be human. .. Only that and the rest will follow it . We need to teach children how to be human , the right and the only true value . That is all we need!

Hello everyone!
ReplyDeleteIn the first sense "multiculturalism" is a description of the many different religious traditions and cultural influences. Multiculturalism describes the existence, acceptance, or promotion of multiple cultural traditions within a single jurisdiction, usually considered in terms of the culture associated with an ethnic group. This can happen when a jurisdiction is created or expanded by amalgamating areas with two or more different cultures.
There is no other place like Sarajevo. Wandering around the old part of the city is like jumping between two words, from Central Europe to Middle East and the other way around. Dear all,
ReplyDeleteChildren learn about diversity through play, including music, clothing, foods, games, celebrations, and dramatic play. Engaging in activities that represent the home cultures, all of the children are able to “, learn new concepts, explore new attitudes, and develop new skills” as well as “, learn more about each other’s families and diverse backgrounds”
Multicultural activities should be inclusive of all parts of the day and all parts of the classroom.
In addition to meeting the educational needs of individual children with unique attributes and backgrounds, educators are also responsible for providing every child with an anti-bias, multicultural education. Children develop biases through messages they hear and see in society. An anti-bias curriculum offers goals to enable every child to construct a confident identity; to develop comfortable, empathetic and just interaction with diversity; and to develop skills for standing up for one’s self in the face of injustice. Example of one activity we do in our school, which has over thirty different nationalities is “ International week” . it is organized in a way that student do projects that represent their country, present them to parents and teachers and learn about others cultures as well as their own.
Having a curriculum that enable us to continue the inclusion of diversity and multiculturalism into the lives of the young children we are lucky enough to teach.
Hello Everyone!
ReplyDeleteI must admit I was glad to see that we are finally talking about this subject, particularly as we are residents of a multicultural country, as far as we are aware that we live in such a rich country, we talk very little about it, we should be proud of our country and our city, after all every year we have so many visitors from other countries because of our multiculturalism. It is enough to pass the Baščarsija to understand what we have. I believe that there is very little talk about this in our education, therefore we as future teachers have to change something about this. I will start with pre-school education, because the children are small enough to except others opinions, this is feasible in kindergarten with different traditional dances, visits to the religious institutions, field trips, stories and discussions, teach children to respect others and that we are all equal, regardless of who has blue or brown hair, whether we visit a church or a mosque, through these discussions certainly that we will achieve the dual function , we will teach children real human values, and also learn something new and expand their knowledge, I believe if we as educators build strong children's attitudes and teach them that we are all essentially the same even though we are different, our children will live healthier lives and in the future they will fight against religious, ethnic discrimination, will live better and certainly safer. If parents are aware of themselves and then their children believe that multiculturalism has prevailed and was more accepted now and which is not the case unfortunately.
Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteLike other here I agree with all that multiculturalism is represented in our capital city Sarajevo.
Sarajevo is clean example how three religions can live in one country, respectively one city. But Sarajevo have one problem about multiculturalism and I think that our generation and next can solve this problem.
Most important problem is religion. We have three religion, and it so big for one small city. Some people have negative think about that like "I am a Muslim and I'm not going to hang out with people of other faiths", I dont approve of such opinion. I'm more for it to be all together unite.
We cant look the people which colors they have, we must accept the people.
I think that multiculturalsm education is important for all of us, beacuse we have to talk to children about multiculturalism. We must teach them to love all people no matter which religion.
Love people and people will love you.

Hi everyone!
ReplyDeleteI think that multiculturalism is very important for our country. It should be way more represented in education process. Importance of multiculturalism is actually to learn about other cultures, nationalities or religions and learn that all of them should be equally respected and accepted. It is very important to get rid of prejudices and to be equally important part which makes a whole.
Best regards.
Martina Laco RN III
Hi Martina. I agree with you, specifically about education. We should talk more about different things, so that we could accept them.
DeleteMulticulturalism means interweaving and cohabitation of several cultures, more forms of cultural life in one area.
ReplyDeleteKeyword multi consists of something more. Multiculturalism should mean the wealth of a society, but not in a way that one's culture is trying to impoverish.
For Bosnia and Herzegovina we can say that she is a epitome of multiculturalism.
Unique example of this is the fact that in Sarajevo there are mosque, church, orthodox church and synagogue placed in a radius of a hundred metres. You can often hear ringing bells from the church and adhan in the mosque at the same time. Only few cities in the world in their heart, in the range of hundred meters, have a religious place of worship of four different religions, as it has in Sarajevo. Cultural differences are what Bosnia and Herzegovina seems immensely rich country, but its people, it seems, are not fully aware of this fact. "Learning about the culture of a country little like being told about the flavor of fruit that you have not tried. Children need to see and experience their culture. However, cultural education (as well as many other things in Bosnia and Herzegovina) is still under the influence of political programs, inherited from the war. "To today's children know about real culture of their country, it is a big commitment of all. Unfortunately, this effort mostly absent, drowned in a sea of political games and propaganda that still plays a major role in this war-torn country. Who cares what children grow up "handicapped", because they are not even given the opportunity to see that, in their own country, there are those who are different from them and that, together with them, carry in their diversity extraordinary wealth.

Hi, everyone.
ReplyDeleteMulticulturalism is the word that describes Sarajevo. Some people think that multiculturalism is negative, but some of them think that multiculturalism is positive. Also I think that multiculturalism is positive. I consider that first we should accept ourselves, so that we could accept others. We should respect each other, because it is only important that we are good persons. I think that in future we should spend more time with each other, so that we can easily learn new things and become friends. In school, teachers should more dedicate to a multicultural education, because a multicultural education will get a student further in life that a classical education will. I really like blog, it is inspiring.
Adela Jugović
Well said :) I agree with you, education is matter to build bridges between people. We have to show acceptance of others and their difference and also show a respect and kindness.
DeleteHello everyone,
ReplyDeleteSince my colleagues have already said a lot about multiculturalism in general, I would only like to put an emphasis on the importance of multicultural education. Multicultural education considers education that respects and promotes diversity in all spheres of human life. At the same time, it is about education, which promotes equality and human rights, opposes discrimination and promotes the values upon which equality is built. That's the reason why multicultural education needs to be applied in curriculum as soon as possible.
Best regards,
Aida Drina RN/III
To me, multiculturalism is different people united in one territory. The greater diversity makes the more beautiful picture of country itself. Yet everything beautiful is characterized by diversity. Although it does not always have to be so, every multicultural country carries his own burden too. Generally people are not taught to understand, love and respect others and different. They are not willing to give and share. Our children were not well educated and raised up, even we live in a multicultural country for a long time now. A country with so much diversity could be the greatest egzample to the world only if we are not selfish and conservative. I think it will not change significantly in the future. Through education, we could make great strides in progress, but the family certainly plays a major role. I am skeptical about this and I do not believe that will ever happen something better than it is today. Everyone will never enjoy equally. And that would be the best. At one class in the third grade I had the opportunity to give a lecture on international holidays. Children have been interested so much and so little did they know about the customs of others.

Hi everyone !
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting topic to talk about, especially about multiculturalism in out country. One of the things that I love about our country is the history of multiculturalism in it. Since a long time ago , a lot of nations migrated to Bosnia and Herzegovina. As the trade of goods began,a lot of people passed through this area, and a lot of them stayed. There was the time of the Ottoman Empire and the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, these two powerful Empires had a big influence on Bosnia and Herzegovina. Religious and cultural influece is seen in the architecture in Sarajevo, but also in other cities across the country.
When the Sefard Jews were expelled from Spain at the end of the fifteenth century , our country accepted the jews , this is just one of many examples of our nations kindness and humanity.
There is one period that I respect the most , and as a young person I am sad that I didn't live in these times. That was the time of the “Brothership and unity”. Young Tito made Yugoslavia possible with the idea of living together as one , your religion wasn't important for the functioning of the country,it was yours and you could belive and pray to what you belive in , in your own house and your own heart. I think that was a good idea for building up a country. But when the war started some people thought they didn't have the freedom to be religious, but I think that was just another tactic to divide people . And they did. Now we live in a country that divides the hell out of us ( :D ) . Religiously , Political etc.
But the core of one Country are the people that live in it. Some of them still struggle to accept and trust one another ,because of the pain and trauma the war caused. But a lot of us , especially younger generations , are very respectful to different nationalities.
My friends and I have a lot of friends from different countries , they visit us all the time , and we give our best to be good hosts and show them our beautiful city . When we see how impressed they are ,we do show of a lot, because where can you find a mosque and a church in hundred meters. We are very proud to live in such a multicultural city.
I want to finish my post with the beautiful quotation from Husein Kapetan Gradascevic (The Dragon of Bosnia)
“ In Bosnia , the church bell never bothered the voice of the muezzein “

Hi everyone!
ReplyDeleteMulticulturalism also entails acknowledging the validity of the cultural expressions and contributions of the various groups. This is not to imply that all cultural contributions are of equal value and social worth, or that all should be tolerated. Some cultural practices are better than others for the overall betterment of society. These cultural expressions and contributions that differ from those of the dominant group in society are usually only acknowledged when there is an economic market for them, such as music for African American, native Indian dances for tourism or Mexican cuisine. When the business sector wants our money, the advertising industry pictures people of color in a positive light. But in most other cases the entertainment media simply caricatures minority stereotypes, such as women usually in supportive roles. Multiculturalism thus means valuing what people have to offer, and not rejecting or belittling it simply because it differs from what the majority, or those in power, regard as important and of value.

Hello everyone,
ReplyDeleteBosnia and Herzegovina is the epitome of multiculturalism. Multiculturalism means permeation and living together more culture, more forms of cultural life in an area, country, state.
Multiculturalism and respect for others is a traditional way of life present in Bosnia. When the current "multicultural" countries such as Spain expelled the other cultures and religions in Bosnia expelled people were welcome. In this way Bosnia settled Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain.
Multiculturalism is still our way of life. The recent war that was not changed. People from all over the world come and admire the our clash of cultures, meeting East and West, modern buildings and oriental houses in same street and modern women and women in hijab who walking together.
Some people see the world and still decide to become Bosnia and Herzegovina citizen.
I thing that we sometimes not aware how big treasure is our diversity and multiculturalism. Then I had a tour of our cities with my Polish friends and I saw how much foreign people admire and wonder our beautiful accepting different, intermingling, similarities despite difference and multiculturalism that we do not talk about...but we live it.

Multiculturalism requires knowlidge about different cultures, their equality and mutually respect. I think we should tend to have an open minds about things and find other cultures intersetings. All people in this world are the same and there is no place for "us" and "them". We as future teachers have to educate our children to recpect people who are diferent races or who have different cultures. We sholud live happily with each others.

For me it means that each group can keep their identity while still participating in the rest of society. Accepting your cultural history and being involved in culturalism. Multiculturism is also freedom to practice your cultural beliefs, allowing for various types of beliefs and cultural practices in any given society. Being apart of different cultures and being able to accept other cultures.

ReplyDeleteTeachers should be prepared to teach units that fully address the cultures of other nations throughout the year and across the curriculum. These units should discuss the food, music, history, stories, clothing and belief systems of these cultures using age-appropriate curriculum.
ReplyDeleteWhenever possible, bringing actual souvenirs or artifacts from the country being studied can be a wonderful teaching tool for all ages. Examples of such items might include a costume which demonstrates traditional clothing, a piece of jewelry, a woven basket, a small figurine or statue, or foreign currency.
To accomplish this part of the lesson, it might be necessary to ask around among the faculty, friends or parents to see who has traveled and what souvenirs are available.

There are also families that live multiculturalism within household and it is manageable as long as they respect each other. But on the other hand, majority of population can not manage multiculturalism and being respectable towards others. We can only try to respect others and their beliefs in future, and our future children to do so. We can only be the ones who can make difference in our society regardless who we are.

Hello everyone,
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I agree with all those what my colleagues said, at first. But I would like to tell you my life story. I am born in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina (considered as a multicultural country), and I've been living here all this time (21 year). Why am I saying this? Where does my story begin? It begins in first class when I met Dragana. Dragana was pretty little girl, with curly hair and beautiful smile. I was shy and I asked her to sit next to her. She accepted and that's the moment we met. I was 7 and I didn't know that there is any difference between us. On Bajram, she didn't congratulate me the same as others. I thought she might don't know, but nothing else. On Christmas time, my parents asked me if I congratulate Dragana? It was her holiday. I didn't. I felt embarrassed. I didn't know I should. Fact that her name is Dragana didn't mean so much to me, and we were never talking about religion. On that day we went to see our family friends, Tatjana and Slobodan, who were celebrating Christmas. We had a great time, as always. But all that time, I was asking myself is Dragana mad on me. I couldn't wait Monday to come to say sorry to her. And Monday came. I sit next to her and first, asked her how she spend the weekend. She said her family united at grandparent's house. She was playing with her cousins and get a beautiful presents. I said I was sorry. 'Why?' she asked. I told her everything. She laughed and said everything is fine. Then came our teacher and asked Dragana to say something about her weekend, why was it special. From that day, everbody were congratulating her Christmas. I mentioned my family friends celebrating Christmas. This means I knew for others and different. But I didn't know that there are names that can be saying who is other religion. Life thought me it's not really always the indicator of religion, but in 90% it is. At least in Bosnia. Growing up, I met a lot of friends and colleagues who make up with me a multicultural Sarajevo.
This make my life rich and different, fulfilled with love and pleasure. I tried so many different dishes, I saw so many customes so I get so many benefits. My friend thinks same as I. It made a lot of differences in my life. It taught me to respect and love everybody, because everyone can bring you smile.
From my point of view, multicultural education is very good for all students. I was always part of multicultural society and I already told you how good it effected me. In Sarajevo, there are some things missing, it's not always perfect education. There are some theories that are not good for our souls, but we have to try and to give as much as we can to change it. We would be a better humans then. I was student of teachers who were opened to meet different, but I also had those ones who were closed and disrespectfull to others. That was a lesson for me, for my life.
When I decided to be a teacher, I remembered those things. That's the reason why all my students will have lessons on which we will talk about every religion, about every nationality, sex and race. Meeting others is the only way to understand and respect them, and that will be my guide for lessons.
