STRESS

Unfortunately, stress has become an inevitable part of our everyday life. Whether we are neglecting our healthy diet, trying to achieve or take on more than we are able to do, worrying too much about the things we can't control, having difficulties in making decisions or just feeling irritable or anxious about everyday problems at home, work, school, etc., the diagnosis may well be that we all find ourselves falling victims to unmanaged stress.

There are different kinds of stressors, or causes/resources of stress, e.g. responsibilities, a long list of things to do (or we impose ourselves to do), work, school, family, children, bills, pressure, moving house, marriage/divorce, etc. The list becomes longer and longer every day. These stressors may affect individuals differently, or individuals may respond to them in a different way. Our body immediately reacts when we are stressed out, e.g. we may experience stomach upset and increased heart and breathing rate, our palms may sweat, we are 'fueled by adrenaline' and our body becomes physically ready for 'a threat'. In that way, we become ready for 'the fight or flight response'.

Unfortunately, a prolonged or unmanaged stressed-out condition can lead to long-term health repercussions. Therefore, an important part of dealing with stress and anxiety is our ability to recognize stress and develop personal strategies for dealing with stress. There are healthy and unhealthy ways of dealing with stress. While the healthy ways (e.g. meditation, exercise, healthy food, time management, asking for help, etc.) may help you to reduce stress and relieve symptoms, the unhealthy ways (e.g. unhealthy food, alcohol, smoking, caffeine, physical violence, bottling up your emotions, etc.) may actually mask the symptoms and causes of stress, and even introduce some new stressors or increase the effects of stress in the future.

It is important to remember that stress is a normal reaction to the demands of life. We should all find out our own best ways to manage stress and decrease its negative effects in our lives. We should think about how we can incorporate healthy stress management into our everyday lives.

Discuss these questions with your classmates on our blog:

What are the most common situations that make you experience stress in everyday life?
How do you feel when you are stressed out? What are the most common symptoms in your case (e.g. emotional (feelings), physical, mental (thoughts))?

What is/are your way/ways of coping with stress?

  1. No matter how much we try to avoid it, the stress has become a part of our everyday. There are different situations in which it appears. More and more often I am stressed because of many obligations for my studies. When I start doing something, I can not ever be completely dedicated to that, because I have in my subconscious all the others, so I think about how I should hurry up because there's not much time left. That frustrates me a lot, because I can not make things go the way I wanted. As I've already said, my studies are a reason why I am stressed lately. There are misunderstanding with my parents, brother, partner but they are not as big reason for my stressed as my faculty is.
In the period in which the stress is more expressed I am very nervous, cheerless, lethargic, and always ready to manifest my frustration on somebody although it doesn't help very much, but there are strong headaches too. I believe that the symptoms exist on the emotional, physical and mental level. If I am happy I constantly think about what bothers me and I feel exhausted. Often I keep some things just for myself as long as I can deal with that. If it's something that lasts for a long time I decide to talk about that with my partner or my friends. They can help me even with conversation and sometimes they do much more. When I am stressed I tend to eat unhealthy food and sweets. Sometimes I go to sleep hoping that everything will just disappear when I wake up. Frequently I go out to forget all that makes me feel so bad or I make myself my favorite food. Sometimes I think that a good way to resist would be a walk in the nature but the unpleasant emotions prevail and go back to the “bad” habits.

  2. Hi!
In today's busy lifestyles, we are constantly exposed to small amounts of stress. Stress becomes our everyday life, he is dangerous to our health.
My most common cause of stress is the environment and negative people. Additionally still coming, and various duties that I have, like as college and all this affects on my mental and physical state. Then I was very moody, tired, I can not talk to anyone.
The ways in which sometimes manage to overcome stress are hanging out with people who have a positive outlook on life, listening to music, drawing, resting, walking...

  3. 1. Nowadays when we have access to everything by clicking one key there is even more space for stress to become our everyday fellow traveler. In this time of my life most common things to make me stress about them are obligations for my study. By doing one thing there are always a few more in the back of my mind that makes me stressing. I also can tell that environment and negative people can also case stress in my life.
    2. Sometimes when I am under stress I cry but I am trying not to. But on the other side when I am nervous or under stress I am talking a lot probably because I want to repress those bad thoughts.
    3. Trying to hanging out with friends if you are that kind of person is good. Also make sure that you are surrounded by positive people and people who makes you laugh.

  4. Stress is a problem that can have different effects on our lives and there are so many factors that are responsible for stress. Some examples of everyday stress are: noise, climate changes, family problems, health and finances, frustrations and conflicts, etc. When people are stressed they want to be alone, they act loudly, they sometimes feel left out, and because of that we need to know how to react when we are stressed.I sometimes feel angry, sad, lonely or weak when I am stressed. The most common symptoms are emotional, mental and physical. In order to make our lives less stressed we need to express our emotions, talk to friends/family, go for a walk or just rest at home.

  5. Every human on Eart has some kind of stress. It can be can either small or a big one. It can also be that big that some people wish something bad happens to them so they don't have to face that stress.
Student have the stress of college. The workers about work, children around school. Can we avoid that if there is too many new obligations every day? We can't, that's why we have to stop worry and to stop destroying our health and life.
Although, we can't change anything, we are still under stress, because we want to change the situation. We think that the power is in our hands.

If you worried abotu your health, stop. You're only making it worse. Stress takes its toll on our body, and new research reveals it is even more dangerous than thought.

  6. Hi everyone!
For me, everyday is stressfull. Main source of my stress are my faculty obligations, or better said – lack of time for completing all study tasks. If I am unable to complete everything on time I become nervous, unplesent, frustrated and all that causes in me an urge to cry. Sometime, in those moments, I feel scared i worried if I'll be able to complete all my tasks and reach my goals. Apart of my faculty obligations, the whole situation in my country, unsecurity and hard life for many around me, represents another source of stress and unpleaseant thoughts. As a result, I eat less but smoke a drink coffee more. Just to find some relaxation. Fights and arguments with close people, especially if it's about minor things, make me angry and stressed out, as I do not want negativity in my life neither do I want to lose close friends about unimportant stuff. However, the hardest for to cope with are injustice and rudeness of other people. How to deal with stress in a not selfharmfull way (i.e. cigarettes and coffee) I don't know. I am still looking for it. But, what helps are talks with friends and family, listening to music, watching TV.

  7. Hi everyone!
Moments that causes stress in my life is care about faculty's obligations: will I manage to do them well and in defined time manner, then missunderstandings in communication with friends or boyfriend. One more thing that causes anger in me, and eventually a stress, too is the fact that I am trying to give my best when it comes to the relations with other persons. When they cannot understand me, or when I do wrong just one time, they judge me. So what happens next is that I get angry and nervous and can't get it out of my mind. I'm not relaxed, and sometimes it is impossible for me to do some everyday's tasks. Also, I think about how I am bad at keeping relations, and I got feared to talk and communicate with new people. However, i succeeded to deal with all that fear, nervous and anger. I've decided to surround myself with the people who appreciate me, and who will tell me, on very nice way, when I'am wrong, without judging me or insulting me. Also, if someone causes anger in me, I just count to ten, take deep breathe, because I know he/she is not worth that ruining my nerves and health. Going on fitness, reading a good book or listening to good music relax me, and help me to cope with everyday's stress situations.

  8. Stress is a very dangerous phenomenon that accompanies all people but in different ways. Adversely affect the health of both physical and psychological. In the modern world there are many things that can lead us into a state of stress. Everyday situations that each of us goes through can also be stressful, family problems or health. At the moment in my life, the most common cause of stress are exams and duties at the university. When I get stressed I feel mentally tired, I'm nervous and often cry, lose my appetite and consequently weight and have a desire to be alone. My way to combat stress is socializing with friends, going out, walk or read a book.

  9. Hi everyone!
1.Stress is part of my everyday life. There are many situations in our lives that lead to stress. In my case it's public appearances, faculty requirements, especially exams. In student life the most stressful month is January. We are facing many obligations that need to be resolved and time is running out.I have many exams that I would like to pass, but I wasn't able to prepare them. Now, I'm very nervous and a bit frustrated because of my exams and I'm scared that i dont have enough time.
    2. When I get stressed I lose my appetite, I feel physically and mentally exhaustion, I'm sensitive I do not like to talk to others because I'm nervous, so I can hurt them with my words. I feel frustrated, because I can't resist the pressure and I just want to relax.
    3. I fight stress by associating with precious and positive people, visiting nature and think positive, because each situation has its own exit.

Well the most thing in the world that I hate is the stress. But I can tell I handle stress pretty easy, like listening to music with the max volume on my headphones. But actually the stress impact is very different for most people and the way to handle it also. When we were kids we had no stress, we just enjoyed our childhood but with growing up and the ages more and more obligations we get, and we are getting in more and more stressful situations, and also with time we try to find the best way to handle it. Stress can happen every time in every situation, even a normal nature walking can have unexpected stress because our mind and body is like that. Sometimes doesn’t give us even time to prepare for it, but when it comes we need to handle it in the right way, and I have always my headphones with me, so no worries.

  11. Hi everyone!
Many people today are faced with stress, from adolescents to the older people. Faculty for me represents the most stress, specially in this period, January and February, when are the exams. Much to do a lot of material to learn a little more time. Then fight with my parents, brother/sister, boyfriend and friends. All of these are situations that we represent stress.
When I'm stressed out, the first to feel frustrated, furious and angry, and when it ends, I feel lonely and crying. The most common symptoms in my case are emotional. I often change emotions, cry, and laugh, but I'm angry and so on.
When I'm stressed out I like to be alone in my room, crying, until the situation calm down. I do not like when there are a lot of people around me, I feel nervous. Then call my mom or boyfriend (if they are not the cause of my stress), I told them what happened and so to calm down and get out of stressful situations. Sometimes I go for a walk.

Disagreement with parents, friends or boyfriend causes stress. it is difficult to maintain good relations with everyone despite of all obligations.
When I get stressed I feel sad and lonely and have no desire to do anything. I often cry when I am under stress.

  13. Stress is an inevitable part of everyday life in the modern world, and every individual has to deal with it in their unique way. For young people the biggest stress makers are school problems, family problems and girlfriends/boyfriends, while older people have more complex problems regarding work issues, money, health and lot of other situations that reflect both on them and their familiy. Stress can have both positive and negative effect on person. Some people deal with stress better than others and perform better in their jobs or making better decisions on how to deal with it. I'm the type of person which needs to speak with friends about problems and situations which are stressful for me and to noot keep it for myself but try to hear other peoples advice. Stress also affects our emotions. It varies from feeling very weak to very strong, from tears and illness to agressive behaviour and doing things we would never do in our normal condition. It's common case that because of stress we do something we regret until the end of our lives or our health gets so bad tha we need to take a lot of medicine and sometimes that causes addiction. If everyone could look their stress in the eyes, not get beaten by it and keep our moral high it would be great but unfortunately lots of us can't.

  14. Hello,

There are a lot of situations that make me experience stress. I am a type of person who hates the injustice. I like positive people, positive thoughts and intentions but unfortunately, people who share the same attitude are minority. When I am dealing with a situation where I can see that people are using my good will or other people's good manners, it's just frustrating me a lot. When I have a good idea how to solve one particular problem, and people do not want to accept it because it's not based on a hypocrisy, it also makes me very unhappy and stressful.

When I'm stressed out, my heart is beating faster and than usual. I usually feel sad and sorry depends on a type of problems and situations. I have to add that I also can feel a huge chaos in my head. I hate this feeling. Stress is terrible thing.

When I'm facing with a stressful situation, I like to go somewhere for a 5 minutes to take a deep breath and to refresh my mind. Coffee also helps me a lot to get better and to settle down my thoughts. After that short but effective ritual, I'm partly ready and focused on a solution for the possible issue.

  17. Hi, Lejla Pribinja RN III

Stress is an everyday part of our lives and I am aware of that, but over the past few years I've learned how to cope with it so it doesn't cause me as many problems as before. Mainly exams make me stressed but only when I feel like I'm not as prepared as I should be.

When I'm stressed out I feel anxious and a bit grumpy. I often lash out on people when it's really unnecessary. I get a weird feeling in my stomach and headaches become often. When it comes to my thoughts, I feel disappointed and I feel like I'm letting myself and/or other people down. But it's a wake up call in a way, so next time before something that usually stresses me out happens, I know how to cope with it.

I don't have a particular way of coping with stress, I just keep in mind that whatever is making me feel stressed out will pass and it is not worth me getting worked up about it. If you ask yourself, "will this matter to me in two months?" and if the answer is no, then it really isn't worth it.

I have done some research and find a perfect example wich I would like to share with everyone. Hope everyone found it as helpfull I did.

A PSYCHOLOGIST WALKED AROUND A ROOM WHILE TEACHING STRESS MANAGEMENT TO AN AUDIENCE. AS SHE RAISED A GLASS OF WATER, EVERYONE EXPECTED THEY'D BE ASKED THE "HALF EMPTY OR HALF FULL" QUESTION. INSTEAD, WITH A SMILE ON HER FACE, SHE INQUIRED: "HOW HEAVY IS THIS GLASS OF WATER?"

ANSWERS CALLED OUT RANGED FROM 8 OZ. TO 20 OZ.

SHE REPLIED, "THE ABSOLUTE WEIGHT DOESN'T MATTER. IT DEPENDS ON HOW LONG I HOLD IT. IF I HOLD IT FOR A MINUTE, IT'S NOT A PROBLEM. IF I HOLD IT FOR AN HOUR, I'LL HAVE AN ACHE IN MY ARM. IF I HOLD IT FOR A DAY, MY ARM WILL FEEL NUMB AND PARALYZED . I EACH CASE, THE WEIGHT OF THE GLASS DOESN'T CHANGE, BUT THE LONGER I HOLD IT, THE HEAVIER IT BECOMES."

SHE CONTINUED, "THE STRESSES AND WORRIES IN LIFE ARE LIKE THAT GLASS OF WATER. THINK ABOUT THEM FOR A WHILE AND NOTHING HAPPENS. THINK ABOUT THEM A BIT LONGER AND THEY BEGIN TO HURT. AND IF YOU THINK ABOUT THEM ALL DAY LONG, YOU WILL FEEL PARALYZED- INCAPABLE OF DOING ANYTHING."

REMEMBER TO PUT THE GLASS DOWN.

Speaking of stress, I can only talk for myself... This is because I think that each of us have different lifestyle and stressful situations. Right now the most stresful situations for me are exams, but my stress is nothing comparing to people who are in some realy hard situations, such as parents who have children but unemployed, such as people who are struggling with their health etc.. We are living in the time where the stress is all around us in many shapes and amount. Speaking for myself, my stres amount is not that bad, and it's all in my commitment to work and to organize my studying. I'm trying to stay out of stress as much as I can, to canalize bad energy and to smile more often. So the best way to fight the stress is to stay positive, to see only positive things in people and in situations that life puts us in. Soooo smile more often even when you're not in the mood to smile!!!! Stay cool, stay positive!! :D

  24. Today stress is one of the biggest problems. Every day we meet with various forms of stress. The most common situations that make me expirience stress are feelings of helpessenss in financial terms, exams and fact that we live in a country where is little or no progress. With the growing pressures of modern technology stress is also growing. Also there are misunderstandings with people at college, work, home... Somethimes stress demage my mood, I feel frustrations and anger for everyone. That is becouse our body responding to any kind of demand or threat. Ther are numerous emotional and physical disorders that have been kinked to stress like depression, stroke, anxiety, nervous... Somethimes after hard day I feel frequent headaches, neck ache, and stomach pain. We can avoid stress with positive mean, doing things you love in free time, reject people and things that increse stress. Physical activity, music are also the ways to avoid stress. We need to accept the things you can't chage, don't try to control uncontrollable and learn to forgive.

  25. Hello everyone :)

I'm not a person who can quickly and easily stressing, but I'm not a person who never experienced stress. Mostly these are some small reasons, love or friendship. I am very happy because this is not some higher reasons, such as health care and the like. Therefore I can say that I am not a person who is quick stressing, and that stress quickly disappear, because it is essentially really little things.
Well considering that not stressing often I couldn't explain how I feel. Mostly I was angry and upset. I like to be alone and that nobody interferes. Physically I am the same, the stress on my body and health isn't affected, but the emotions and the psyche is, a lot.
My only way of dealing with stress is to be separated from all the people to be alone, and their anger and stress out of me when I was alone. Shower and walk a lot to help, and it's very effective.

  26. Hello colleagues!
This is an interesting topic, I have read all the comments and I have found out about new and different ways of dealing with stress, and I also think that this topic is related to our previous topic "Mental health". I get easily stressed, every little insignificant situation can cause me stress. For example, if I have to start a conversation with stranger, if I have to present something in front of 10 or more people, if I have to answer the call from an unknown number, preparing for an exam...all that things make my day stressful.
So, when I am stressed I get angry easily, nervous and I start to worry about things in general. Sometimes, when I am stressed my stomach starts to hurt, but that doesn't happen so often.
Because I tend to think about things the easy way. If I have a stressful situation i think about solutions. If there is a soulution, than there is no need to be stressed but if there is no solution, why would I stress? Will that help? No. Don't stress, let the time be the solution.

  28. Hi everyone!

    1. There are many factors that can cause stress, like studying, jam traffic or negative people. It can be caused by leaving our work, homework and responsibilities to the last minute. When that happens people are always in state of chaos and crisic. I feel stressed when my schedule is preoccupied, when I’m in traffic jam or when I have a lot of worries.

    2. Usually a lot of things are happening at once and I just feel that I cannot control everything and that’s the moment when my stress starts to increase. Then I start to worry even about little things. My heart pounds faster, blood pressure rises and I’m in bad mood. I think that we can’t avoid stress in our lives because life is full of challenges and that means that we need to deal with good and bad things that we go through.

    3. I think that we just need to learn how to control our thoughts and emotions, and be more organized. We need to redirect our energy and thoughts. Instade of asking "Why is this happening to me?". We need to ask "What can I do?" Then I feel like I can control situations that I'm going through and have more strenght and motivation to do anything. We need to remind ourselves everything that happen is part of our journey. Having faith and positive thoughts helps me to deal with stressful situations.

  29. Most common situations that make me experience stress in everyday life are ones linked to my responsibilities which includes studying, family, friends, and hobbies. Sometimes I am just not able to satisfy every person including myself, something somewhere is going to be undone. I feel like not so good time managing will cause stress in my life. If I am stress out I am feeling emotional break, sometimes I cry, sometimes I am angry, and sometimes I just want to run away. So my ways of dealing it would be acts before I became stressed out. I am trying to ignore less important things and people in my life and focusing on important ones. Also I like to make month planner to avoid lack of time. But if stress happens, I prefer to listen to some relaxing music, or go with good old friends on some long walks and I can’t forget to mention a cup of good coffee. That would be my stress therapy.

  30. Hi!
Stressful situations in my life are not as frequent, but stress is a normal (if it is not too often), because it is one of the emotions. I have a habit of late and this is one reason why stress appears and there are daily tasks: at school, at home and in free time. I think the mistake that we humans make is that we complicate our lives. We want to do everything what we want.
When I am stressed out, I feel tense and anxious. I'm feeling down. Sometimes stress helps me, because it encourages me to do something good. Because of stress (for example unplanned situations, unforeseen events) I feel pain in my stomach. There are problems with sleep and nervousness. It affects the people who are around me. When I'm stressed out I learn faster. Everybody knows that we can do more when we are stressed out. Sometimes, because of the stress, my concentration falls.
In today's lifestyle impossible to resolve stress. But it is possible to control. First I try to discover the cause of stress. Sometimes I face to face with the cause or I turn away from it. If I want to do more than I can, then I do against natural law. Nature has given everyone a measure of energy for adaptation. People spends more than they are able to.

  31. I think that depends a lot on the person's personality. I am the kind of person that's not often under stress. I try to see every situation for what it truly is - temporary. Stress can affect one's health deeply and barely anything is worth that price. I came to a conclusion that regardless on whether I feel stressed out or not things will happen. I trained myself to think that. I don't let negative thoughts lead me in life. I see the world as something lasting very shortly. When times get tough I concentrate on my religion and God. In time I realized He's the only one who can solve problems and the one who decides what will happen no matter my stress.

The acceclerated pace of life and obligations that accumulates day by day, are bringing a lot of stress. Sometimes I'm feeling like I'm in a such situation and that there is no way out. From stress our body became weaker and our nerves as well. Current issues are exams. January is basically the most stressfull month for students. There are to many worries, fear and a wish to make everything in a best way, accumulates stress. I have headaches often, worring about is everything going to be ok, and that sometimes leads me to agressive, behaviour, I became histeric and sometimes I even have cry attack. And in the end when all this is over I feel such a relief. I'm still learning how to cope with stress, and instead I'm trying to find something to replace it with, when I can't conrol it all.

  34. 1. We all want to feel safe and secure, but as we get older, we realize that we cannot always count on things being the same. We experience different incidents in our lives that turn our world upside down and cause us to feel stress. Most of these incidents we cannot control, others we can control to a certain degree. Some of us are fortunate enough not to experience these stressors until adulthood. Others experience stress as young children.
Some of the more notorious causes of stress are the following:
    Death of a loved one
This can be a spouse, parent, child or friend. Death is part of life, but the death of a loved one is something that causes significant stress. Our hearts are broken as we grieve for our loved one and our lives are seriously disrupted. This is something which we can do little about, unfortunately, and also something we all have to deal with, sooner or later. Many people recover from this stressor and continue with their lives. 35.
Others never fully recover. Death of a loved one can cause a number of serious illnesses that we take on ourselves, including depression.

  37. The most common situations in which I get stressed out are the most trivial ones, such as domestic atmosphere with my relatives and at my workplace. I usually fell quite anxious and uncomfortable but I manage throuogh it somehow and deal with the problem at hand as best as I can in the given situation. I rarely show any physical symptoms of stress because I channel the energy that would in most people go to waste and turn it into something positive and useful. When there is a prolonged stress period eg. couple of days I try to have regular sleeps and to eat on time, long story short never changing the routine. As anything else in life too much stability can have a negative effect, if we always stick to our daily routines nothing that much exciting happens, and new things in our lives can be quite a stress relief therapy. So all in all never give up in face of trouble and hardship, for there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

  38. 1.What are the most common situations that make you experience stress in everyday life?
Not being able to do something I planned to do in a certain way, or some people who get to me... it's the simple things, if something is not the way I want it to be.
    2. How do you feel when you are stressed out?
I'm definitelly not that fun to be around. I just go to my own world of thoughts and try to process everything.
3.What are the most common symptoms in your case (e.g. emotional (feelings), physical, mental (thoughts))?
In my case little things get on my nerves. I just don't feel too happy about anything and I try to block out everything and everyone.
4.What is/are your way/ways of coping with stress?
I just try to relax, make sense of the situation, take a deep breath and think to myself ''Is it really worth it? ''

Is this what you are feeling right now? Comments such as these are common every day occurrences in our busy lives – and we call it STRESS. Although never quite adequately defined, vague generalisations such as “Stress and tension are normal reactions to events that threaten us” are used to describe it. Such threats can come from accidents, financial troubles and problems on the job or with family and through our emotional and physical reactions to the given situations, we become what is termed ‘stressed’. When it comes to myself,I get stressed mostly when exams are coming. Also I am usually stresssul due to my health problems. The best way to stop it is to find some smart and usuful option or solution that will make you patient and calm. You should stay calm alwys if you have to not be ill and suffered.

For me stress is the most awfull emotion of all emotions we feel often. I hate stress even more than sadness. I'm really stressed out whole day or two before tests. Interesting thing is that the more ready I am for test, the more stressed I am and my fear of failure is bigger and I can not explain that, i wish i could. I can be a little stressed while I present my paper to profesor and colleagues, I just don't like when all eyes are on me, I'm used to it, but I don't like it. The most common symptom in my case is emotional feeling, it's the only stress symptom that bothers me and besides that one I'm not even noticing other sypmtoms and we're too young for physical and mental ones. I'm not saying I never felt one though, but I'm talking about the most common and normal sympoms for my age. I'm sure it will get much more serious with aging, but that is life, isn't? My way of getting rid od stress is to socialize with persons I like, because when I go out with friends I laugh so much that I literally become incapable of feeling bad. I realised that the laughter is the best cure for stress and sorrow.
